Our global weight problem is a concern to health organizations everywhere as there has been a corresponding increase in health issues; more worrying still is the number of school-age children that are falling into the obese category. The patient ones have to decide to face this problem by adjusting their diet and taking more exercise but the impatient ones usually decide on surgery. However, desperate people often make poor decisions and decide to take weight loss drugs as they are less expensive than surgery.
The idea behind the drugs is to quicken each person’s metabolism enabling the weight to be lost much quicker. Unfortunately for the manufacturers, it was found that incidence of heart valve disease were connected to the use of the weight control pills and were rapidly removed from the shelves. Of course the manufacturers did not give up that easily and new drugs were created, these drugs are still being prescribed even though the Federal Drug Administration has not yet approved them.
Most people have known friends or family members who have tried using diet pills and have seen tremendous improvement. Let’s be honest, it’s in our nature to like things that provide near instant results, without having to put in any effort. As a result of this, consumers everywhere have spent untold millions on these supposed wonderful weight loss drugs.
Even with all the testing and new techniques available for manufacturers, many side effects like nausea and diarrhea still exist with the new generation of weight control pills which, incidentally, can still be purchased over the counter. Other harmful side effects include tightness in the chest, urinary tract problems and stroke. An overdose of the diet pills can cause tremors, confusion, hallucinations, shallow breathing, renal failure even heart attack and convulsions.
The side effects will depend on the person taking the medicine and can be related to their lifestyle; a consultation with the doctor first, rather than buying them over the counter, can help to reduce side effects; stopping using the drugs completely may not eradicate all the problems they may have caused. These effects can be equally unpleasant as the side effects occurring as a result of taking weight control pills.
Whilst the effectiveness of these weight loss drugs is not in question, they are more effective if they are used alongside a controlled diet and exercise regime. The type of balanced food groups would be oats, cereals, rice, potatoes with fruit and vegetables as the best source of minerals, fiber and vitamins.
Exercise can be done in whatever form suits the individual best but it should incorporate fat-burning exercises that will burn up any excess calories. The best exercise plans should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises as this helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase a person’s metabolism and assist with weight loss.
